“Can you tell me please, which way I ought to go from here? That depends a good deal on where you want to get to. Said the Cat.”

-Lewis Caroll, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865)

Strategic Planning for Public and Nonprofit Organizations is defined as           “a disciplined effort to produce fundamental decisions and actions that shape and guide what an organization is, what it does, and why it does. It is a set of concepts, procedures, and tools designed to assist leaders and managers accomplish these tasks.”

State and local governments, departments and agencies and nonprofit organizations across the U.S. have never been under more scrutiny to deliver the highest levels of results and performance. A strategic plan is an essential tool in assisting public and nonprofit organizations in this task.

However, many organizations find that a good strategic plan is also one of the more complex and challenging areas they must address. Without a sound strategic plan, organizations spend most of their time putting out fires – decision-making is, at best, ad hoc. Identifying where you want to go and how you are going to get there is no small feat. Strategic Planning translates the organization’s strategic thinking into action - creating a roadmap for how to get there. Strategic Planning is the bridge between the vision and the action. Here, the team translates what could be into strategies and tactics that will lead toward the desired results.

New Strategic Directions works with senior leadership to:

  • Revisit the existing plan based on strategic thinking above.
  • Identify a strategic planning approach that fits with the organizations culture and leadership.
  • Create a strategic plan work group, identify time-line and milestones for completion.
  • Facilitate the agreed upon strategic planning process.
  • Craft a strategic plan for the whole organization based on shared mission, vision and values.
  • Develop Business and Operation plans in alignment with the organization’s strategic plan.
  • Develop Information Technology and Human Resources strategies that support the organization’s strategic direction and priorities.
  • Identify and engage strategic partners and other stakeholders to achieve desired results.
  • Develop a results-based budget, allocating resources to the desired results.
